Thanks a lot Alanis

(The recovery process begins.)

I’ve had a bit of a scare this week. I took a hard fall to my left knee at last Fridays practice. I was able to walk out fine but by Saturday morning I could barely walk. That mornings piss and especially crap was incredibly awkward; Just try pooping with only being able to bend one knee, It’s not easy and feels really strange. By Monday I was able to walk fairly normally but full range of motion from my knee was still not happening. There’s sharp pain whenever I twist a certain way or if I use any sort of muscle in my knee; I was getting scared. At that same practice there was another knee injury and I learned via facebook she got news that her recovery time was 3 months due to a sprained MCL. Now I was really scared. Did I have the same thing?

And to make matters worse…that Friday night I was voted (along with 3 other ladies) to be able to bout in an upcoming tournament. So isn’t it ironic the night I get word of bouting for the first time, I fall so hard on my knee that I might be taken out? Thanks a lot Alanis. I can’t stop singing your freaking song.

So I made the dreaded call and set-up a doctor’s appointment. It was no longer responsible of me to wait out the pain. I needed answers. I needed to know if bouting on the 12th was even still a possibility. I hate going to the doctor; I have this strange mentality that you can “tough it out.” I can only recall going to the doctor three times in my 29 years for anything that wasn’t a routine check-up. (School medical exams, having a baby and annual pap smears don’t count, those are pretty much requirements.)

The doctor examines my knee. Though I can’t see swelling she says she can. When she presses her fingers into the skin of my knee it keeps the impression for a moment before springing back to normal…a sign that there’s fluid retention. She sends me off to the local hospital for x-rays. Results come back of arthritis and bursitis. My recommended course of action is no physical activity for the next week. I should take two Aleve each morning and night while icing and elevating my knee through out the day. That I could handle! I was so relieved to find out that they didn’t think I sprained anything and that as soon as it’s feeling better I can return to skating. Yahoo!

And now, I’m in the waiting game for it to heal. I know that even if it starts to feel better that I am not to return to skating until the full week is up. And right now that’s not an issue. I’m still having some pain in certain positions but the real waiting game is, will it heal before the 12th? Actually will it heal before than so I can return to practice and prepare for the 12th? Only time will tell.

Random Ramblings with a Splash

Man, oh man. It feels like ever since I made it a goal to write a blog weekly, I’ve become completely speechless. So here is a few random ramblings that don’t quite require their own blog but together make a little something crazy…

It feels incredibly good when I can delete a show from my dvr. I am constantly annoying my husband with how fast I want to delete our shows when quote “we have plenty of room for more.” But I get this overwhelming sense of accomplishment when I hit delete. One less thing to look at. One less thing waiting to get done. It just tickles my fancy. I can’t help it. The organizer inside of me wants things at a minimum, so please honey just deal because it makes me happy.

Now, I know something that does not make me feel good. In fact, it’s gross and makes me grind my teeth in irritation when it happens. Ever take a dump and when the shit drops it splashes water right onto your butthole? Yikes! I hate that!!! Nothing like pinching off a loaf and you get the surprise cold back splash. LOL, yes this blog is random today.

For those of you that have been following my path to becoming a derby chick and are excited to watch me bout…well I’m that much closer! On December 17th I was officially tested on all my minimum required skills and passed! Yahoo! Now I’m allowed to practice with the big girls. And best yet, we have a bout in Evansville, IN that features both our teams. SO, a lot of girls are needed to travel and compete and guess what??? Yours truly, should be bouting. I only say should because this past Friday I took a really hard fall on my knee. I don’t think it’s seriously injured, everyday it feels better and better but I’m still not ready to skate. And with the bout only being three weeks away, I really need to be able to practice. So my fingers are crossed that everything goes well and I can bout.

And for those of you that read and are creative, I still need a derby name. Right now the leading contender is Va Va Vicious. You’ve got something better??? (Unfortunately my Husband’s awesome suggestions of: Macho Ma’m Brandy Savage, Queen of the Slammed and Queen Kong are already taken)

Also, I’m a HUGE fan of movies. And last year I attended an Oscar Party at the Hollywood Palms in Naperville and had a blast. (She how glamerous we look above.) The $20 admission gets you champagne, appetizers, “swag bag”, and photo. You get to walk the “red carpet”; the Academy Awards are shown the BIG screen; there is a silent auction and the place has GREAT drinks. I’m purchasing my ticket this Friday, so PLEASE join me. I want to overrun the place with my friends. For more information click on the link below:

Polar Plunge for Special Olympics!

Hear-ye! Hear-ye! Step right up and support this wonderful cause. The Polar Plunge in Rockford benefits the Illinois Special Olympics. I’m excited (and a wee bit nervous) to take the plunge March 5 in freezing water with my friends from the Rockford Rage Woman’s Roller Derby. I am so grateful today to be an athlete and to be a part of a large group of ladies that is constantly helping others. My personal fundraising goal is $150.00 which is double the minimum amount due. That is completely do-able but I need your help! Even $1 can make a difference. Take two less trips to the vending machine, skip that fast food cheeseburger and donate here instead. It will make you feel good, It’ll help me out and it’ll help out those 4,000 young children with intellectual disabilities continue their year-round sports training and competitions.
